Seems this is becoming a regular thing, me contemplating work conversations long after they’ve occured. Perhaps I’ll make a mental note to do one a week from now on.
Anyway.
Today we were taking about Jason Akermanis getting forced to retire from the Western Bulldogs. I was the only person who supported him, and thought getting the sack was wrong.
All sorts of arguments came about ‘how could I support someone who openly made comment about gays” etc etc etc.
Here’s the thing. I support gay rights and I support a team spirit, but I wholeheartedly support being able to voice your opinion.

To me, at the end of the day, all Akker did was voice his opinion. Sure, I dont agree with his opinions, but thats the thing. Their HIS opinions, no one elses. If I mouthed off about a controversial issue, I would expect argument back, but I’d also expect some sort of respect that it’s my opinion.

I want to know how we live in such a society, that people are punished for having thoughts and opinions that differ to others.

My view - a football club is a business just like any other. Him making those comments makes the whole club look bad. Getting rid of him is a business decision, and a smart one at that. As a football player, he’s a role model for SO many young children, and even adults. Him voicing his opinion like that, with no repercussions, leaves the gate open for everyone who admires him to repeat his opinions and fuel the discrimination.

Put it in context, if I was in a workplace and someone yelled out ‘nice tits’ - that’s their opinion, but it also has the ability to make me feel uncomfortable. It’s his opinion, but it’s also inappropriate given the situation. Same aplies with Akker. It’s a time and place issue. Out with the boys for a drink - a couple of comments might be let slide. In a national newspaper - consequences are definitely necessary.

Good.

I’m certain most if my single friends will scoff at this. I don’t mind the judgment because it’s something I am incredibly lucky to have. My boyfriend. At the moment I’m not too sure how my life would be without him, not in an ‘i can’t live without him’ sorta way, more in an I wouldn’t want to. He is supportive of anything I want to do. If I want to save my money, he’s all for it, but if I go out and make a big splurge on clothes he’s right along side me helping me justify everything. He’s amazingly complimentary. Since being with him my body image has changed immensely - I by no stretch of the imagination love my body - but it’s not so bad, I guess. He constantly tells me how much he loves me, and my body.. He makes me feel like a goddess. Everyone should have this, should get to feel like this. Plus he is so thoughtful (well.. Most of the time ;)).

I just can’t believe that I have managed to find such an amazing guy. I’m a very lucky girl, and I know it, and I try not to take it for granted. I like making plans with him. Holiday plans (possibly in sept), tv plans (halvers in a 55 inch led? Yes please!), house plans, puppy plans. At the moment he is pretty much the only part of my future that is certain. I know that, for now at least, he is a constant in my life, and he’s there for me whatever decisions I make.

I liked him for a long time before we got together - we kissed and then three weeks later I moved continents - and it was crazy when I found out he felt the same. Being with him, spending time with him, knowing that he’s mine.. It feels incredibly good. That’s how I feel currently. Good.

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2010-7-18)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2010-7-18):

I’ve had a bad night and so I’m going to have a go now. Today started with receiving an email from my sister, telling me that there was a job available at her work, admin, $42,000 a year. Excellent. I started getting excited, I was talking to mum about it who got me even more excited, talked to Stu about it and got even MORE excited. My sister started at this company when she was my age as a receptionist, and now, at 38, runs 39 branches across Australia, and is currently in South Africa at the moment watching the world cup final because the company felt like sending her there. Shanghai last month. Africa again in August. New Zealand later this year. I was getting excited, talking to Stu about being able to live somewhere between the offices at the airport and his work in West Lakes, making plans, fantasising. Thinking that this could be the start of a promising career. Then. I get a call from my mum in the night. My sister spoke to her big boss about it, who didn’t think it was a good idea, hiring family.

Straight off the bat, I’m annoyed that she even spoke to me about the job before talking to Bernard (her boss) about it. I got all my hopes up for nothing. She’s usually a pretty precise person so I had just assumed that this wouldn’t be a spur of the moment thought from her.

Now I feel all up in the air. I was making plans for the next couple of years, it was acareer, which is important to me at the moment, and I would have the option of doing uni externally later, which means that’s one last thing I have to worry about right now. I don’t want to stay in my current job (which is just that, a job, not a career) unless I go to uni next year, I have no idea what I want to study at uni (and I don’t really see the point in going through all the stress of exams and assignment and classes if I’m not going to end up using said degree), and I have no idea what I want as a career.

I don’t know what I want to do. Do I just start applying for similar jobs in large companies, hoping to be able to work my way up there? Do I just make a decision and hope I like the uni course I pick? Do I stay at my current job and save up enough to travel again and THEN figure out uni/careers/life? Do I decide to move out with Stu and then be unable to save any money for travel, a new car which will probably be necessary soon, house deposits etc? Do I crawl up in a ball and rock back and forth whilst whispering ‘the shopping’s coming, the shopping’s coming?’. At the moment I’m opting for the last option on that list.

Without sounding overly dramatic, I really don’t want to make the wrong decision.

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2010-7-4)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2010-7-4):

If we’re in love with you, we love your body. Your potbelly, everything. Even if..."

“
We love your body. If we’re in love with you, we love your body. Your potbelly, everything. Even if you’re insecure about something, we love your body. You feel like you’re not this or that? We love your body. We embrace everything. Because it’s you.

Speaking of your body, you don’t understand the power of your own smell. Any woman who is currently with a man is with him partly because she loves the way he smells. And if we haven’t smelled you for a day or two and then we suddenly are within inches of you, we swoon. We get light-headed. It’s intoxicating. It’s heady.

We remember forever what you say about the bodies of other women. When you mention in passing that a certain woman is attractive — could be someone in the office, a woman on the
street, a celebrity, any woman in the world, really — your comment goes into a steel box and it stays there forever. We will file the comment under “Women He Finds Attractive.” It’s not about
whether or not we approve of the comment. It’s about learning what you think is sexy and how we might be able to convey it. It’s about keeping our man by knowing what he likes.

We also remember everything you say about our bodies, be it good or bad. Doesn’t matter if it’s a compliment. Could be just a comment. Those things you say are stored away in the steel
box, and we remember these things verbatim. We remember what you were wearing and the street corner you were standing on when you said it.

Never complain about our friends — even if we do. No matter how many times we say a friend of ours is driving us crazy, you are not to pile on. Not because it offends us. But because it adds to the weight that we carry around about her.

Remember what we like. When I first started dating my husband, I had this weird fascination with the circus and clowns and old carnival things and sideshow freaks and all that. About a month after we started dating, he bought me this amazing black-and-white photo book on the circus in the 1930s, and I started sobbing. Which freaked him out. I thought, Oh, my God, I mentioned this three or four weeks ago and talked about it briefly, but he was really listening to me. And he actually went out and researched and found this thing for me. It was amazing.

We want you to order Scotch. It’s the most impressive drink order. It’s classic. It’s sexy. Such a rich color. The glass, the smell. It’s not watered down with fruit juice. It’s Scotch. And you ordered it.

Stand up, open a door, offer a jacket. We talk about it with our friends after you do it. We say, “Can you believe he stood up when I approached the table?” It makes us feel important. And it makes you important because we talk about it.

No shorts that go below the knee. The ones almost like capri pants, the ones that hover somewhere between the kneecap and the calf? Enough with those shorts. They are the most embarrassing pants in the world. They should never be worn. No woman likes those.

Also, no tank tops. In public at least. A tank top is underwear. You’re walking around in your underwear. Too much.

No man should be on Facebook. It’s an invasion of everyone’s privacy. I really cannot stand it.

You don’t know this, but when we come back from a date, we feel awkward about that transition from our cute outfit into sexy lingerie. We don’t know how to do this gracefully. It’s embarrassing. We have to find a way to slip into another room, put on the outfit as if it all happened very easily, and then come out and it’s: Look at me! Look at the sexy thing I’ve done! For you, it’s the blink of an eye. It’s all very embarrassing. Just so you know.

Panties is a wonderful word. When did you stop saying “panties”? It’s sexy. It’s girlie. It’s naughty. Say it more.

About ogling: The men who look, they really look. It doesn’t insult us. It doesn’t faze us, really. It’s just — well, it’s a little infantile. Which is ironic, isn’t it? The men who constantly stare at our breasts are never the men we’re attracted to.

There are better words than beautiful. Radiant, for instance. It’s an underused word. It’s a very special word. “You are radiant.” Also, enchanting, smoldering, intoxicating, charming, fetching.

Marriage changes very little. The only things that will get a married man laid that won’t get a single man laid are adultery and whores. Intelligence and humor (and your smell) are what get you laid. That’s what got you laid when you were single. That’s what gets you laid when you’re married. Everything still works in marriage: especially intelligence and humor. Because the sexiest thing is to know you.
”

- A Letter To Men by Christina Hendricks (via karawest)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2010-6-20)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2010-6-20):
