The book is about a young girl who discovers that she can taste people’s emotions in the food they make. Later, this “skill” evolves to a point where she can pinpoint the area of the country where the food was made, what kind of manufacturing plant it went through, etc. etc. Her first experience was in tasting her mother’s “emptiness” in a slice of lemon cake. It unnerves her so that the school nurse becomes concerned she may have an eating disorder, since she begins to avoid all food (except for packaged goodies, which taste like “metal”) in an effort to get away from all the emotions that they unleash when she takes a bite.
