Is it an overly Aussie thing to ride in the front seats of taxis?

Taxi drivers over here always seem a little surprised/taken aback when I jump in the front seat rather than the back seat, and strike up a conversation.

Sidenote: Halloween party tonight was loads of fun. Plus the host cooked me curly fries.
